Which Network Is Affected By This New Policy?
Nigerian mobile network operators are implementing a new USSD code framework. It requires all providers to use a unified code format, replacing their individual codes. The Nigerian Communications Commission set a deadline of May 17, 2023, for this implementation.
What Are The New USSD Codes For MTN, Airtel, Glo & 9mobile?
The NCC has reviewed and introduced new USSD codes, which are as follows:
- NIN: Dial *996#
- VAS: Dial *305#
- Share services: Dial *321#
- Account Balance: Dial *310#
- Data plans: Dial *312#
- Airtime recharge: Dial *311#
- Borrowing services: Dial *303#
- Data balance: Dial *323#
Please note that not all network providers have fully implemented these new codes. Some old codes can still be used to access USSD services.
For instance, MTN has implemented all codes except for data plans, while Airtel has implemented all codes except for airtime recharge.
Other network providers are expected to fully implement these changes in the near future.
How Can Unified USSD Codes Be Defined?
USSD is a telecommunications system that allows users to perform various functions without needing an internet connection.
It has gained popularity in sub-Saharan Africa and is now widely used by both telecom operators and banks in Nigeria.
Each service provider has different USSD codes for different purposes, which can be confusing for users.
To simplify the process, the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) is working towards harmonizing these codes.
This means that users will be able to use the same code across different network providers, making it easier to access services like airtime recharge regardless of the network they are using.
What Is The Reason Behind The NCC Push For Unified USSD Codes?
In 2017, the NCC began working on harmonizing USSD shortcodes. Their goal was to make it easier for users by eliminating the need to remember multiple codes.
The NCC believed that this harmonization would stimulate competition among service providers and streamline marketing efforts.
However, there were some drawbacks mentioned, such as the need for network providers to reconfigure their equipment and the potential loss of customers during the transition.

How Does This Impact Banking Services?
The NCC’s report recommended that banks should keep their codes unchanged to avoid affecting their service delivery.
Gbenga Adebayo, Chairman of the Association of Licensed Telecom Operators, clarified that the unified USSD codes only apply to telecom services and do not impact banking services.
Therefore, you can continue using your banking services as usual without any interference.
